Academy Award-nominated director John Singleton has passed away tragically at age 51 due to stroke. The director was removed from life support on Monday evening after suffering a major stroke on April 17th in Los Angeles and being in a coma for the last 2 weeks. Singleton wrote and directed the groundbreaking urban drama film “Boyz n the Hood” (1991), starring Ice Cube and Cuba Gooding Jr., as young men navigating gang culture in South Central Los Angeles. With “Boyz n the Hood”, he became the first black director nominated for an Oscar and, at age 24, the youngest person ever nominated in the history of the Academy. Singleton also directed the films "Poetic Justice" (1993, starring Janet Jackson & Tupac) “Rosewood” (1997), “Shaftv (2000, starring Samuel L. Jackson), “Baby Boy” (2001, starring Tyrese Gibson & Taraji P. Henson), and “2 Fast 2 Furious” (2003), and other hit action films such as "Four Brothers" (2005, starring Mark Wahlberg & Andre 3000 ), and "Abduction" (2011, starring Twilight star Taylor Lautner)) Singleton also dabbled in music video direction, with one of his most famous music videos being the long form production for Michael Jackson's 1992 hit single “Remember the Time”, co-starring actor Eddie Murphy and Kenyan supermodel Iman.
In addition to producing some of his own films, he also produced other Hollywood projects including as well as the Oscar-nominated film “Hustle and Flow” (2005) and “Black Snake Moan” (2006). He was co-creator and producer of the FX TV drama series “Snowfall.”
"We are sad to relay that John Singleton has died. John passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends," his family said in a statement. "We want to thank the amazing doctors at Cedars-Sinai Hospital for their expert care and kindness and we again want thank all of John’s fans, friends and colleagues for all of the love and support they showed him during this difficult time."
