-New Urban Cinema- After A Standing Ovation At This Year's Cannes Film Festival, Spike Lee's "BlacKkKlansman" Makes Its way to German Theaters This Weekend
Director Spike Lee introduces moviegoers to a fresh new talent, John David Washington, in his latest film, "BLACKkKLANSMAN" |
As reported in NUY 40+ 's coverage of the Cannes Film Festival this past May, director Spike Lee has released a new film, co-produced by Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele (of 2017's "Get Out") entitled, "BlacKkKlansman" , a film based on the extraordinary true story of a black man who managed to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan.
The film, which earned a standing ovation at Cannes, has now been released in Germany and stars John David Washington, son of screen legend Denzel Washington- who interestingly enough, previously resided in Hamburg, Germany in his former career as a running back for Hamburg's American football team, the Sea Devils.
In BlacKkKlamnsman, John David Washington portrays real-life Colorado detective Ron Stallworth. Based on Stallworth's book by the same name, the film follows the author as he makes history in the early 1970s as the first African-American detective to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Determined to make a name for himself, Stallworth bravely sets out on a dangerous mission: infiltrate and expose the Ku Klux Klan. The young detective soon recruits a more seasoned colleague, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), into the undercover investigation of a lifetime. Together, they team up to take down the extremist hate group as the organization aims to sanitize its violent rhetoric to appeal to the mainstream. Described by critics as "stylish, hilarious, and uncompromising" (Vulture Magazine) and "Spike Lee's Best, and Most Necessary Movie in Years (Washington Post), while it's still early to see what's going to come ahead in the 2019 awards season, we're predicting awards show buzz for this one.
