Although it's just a regular summer day for African Americans in Germany, NUY 40+ would like to wish you a Happy 4th of July! On the day that the United States of America celebrates its formation as a new nation separate from the British Empire, check out today's 1-minute culture capsule on the first American to die in the Revolution, Crispus Attucks, a free, black longshoreman from Massachusetts. As the abolitionist movement gained momentum in Boston some 80 years later, supporters lauded Attucks as having played a heroic role in the history of the United States. Through his life as a free man and through his death, Attucks became an icon of the anti-slavery movement in the mid-19th century.
